Hariyali Teej

    What is Hariyali Teej?

The green festival of Shiva and Parvati's reunion

    Katha

Maa Parvati performed penance across one hundred and eight births to win Mahadev as her husband. Born as the daughter of Himalaya, she went into the forest and undertook severe sadhana — giving up food, living on air alone, enduring rain, cold and heat without shelter.

Her companions led her deeper into the forest, where she fashioned a Shivling of sand and worshipped it. On Shravana Shukla Tritiya, Mahadev was pleased and accepted her as his own.

That day of reunion became Hariyali Teej. Women wear green, apply mehndi and ride swings — the greenness of Shravana itself is held to be the celebration of that meeting.
